This morning I woke up bright and breezy and feeling good. I headed off to weigh in with a little spring in my step and was happy to step on the scales – I wasn’t even annoyed at a 1.5lbs loss, even though I had hoped for more…yes, I know I am a greedy mare! Here is the picture proof…
…and the signing in desk was fun this morning too; I love getting the opportunity to speak to everyone.
The group went well and my favourite lady made me chuckle. The consultant had asked who remembered the old adverts about ‘going to work on an egg’…and the lady piped up, “I tried to go to work on an egg – I didn’t work and I had to get the bus.” She is just so quick-witted and left us with visions of her sitting on an egg and rolling to work! Anyway, today we talked about Slimming World ruts – or rather food ruts – and how we can change things up a little. You all know that my breakfasts are very similar – porridge and a banana, or a banana and my cereal bars, and we discussed how this could hinder our weight loss. Yet I struggle to see how changing up breakfast could help…so I did a little digging!
Current advice tends to lean towards us having a diet that is similar on a daily basis. The thinking being that if you eat similar foods regularly, you are less likely to over consume – as it doesn’t taste new and exciting. This seems like a fair point, and I suppose that as long as you are covering your nutritional bases, then why not eat the same? Perhaps variety isn’t the spice of life! But what about boredom?
We all know that boredom can lead to snacking, and so if we eat the same foods – or similar foods – how likely are we to be able to stick to a healthy eating regime? The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published research that suggested, regardless of your weight, those with a varied diet consumed more calories. But what if that ‘Monday = chicken and veggies, Tuesday = salmon and sweet potato, Wednesday = chilli con carne, etc’ type of regime means that you start to wander due to boredom? Don’t ‘they’ say that familiarity breeds contempt?
Personally, I know how much damage boredom can do in my diet – many failed weight loss attempts can back me up with this! So I am going for the ‘eat with your eyes’ approach and I try to ensure that I have a variety of foods. I might stick to the same breakfasts, but I try to think of new meal ideas for lunch and dinner so that I stay interested. A boredom binge could see me munch through thousands of calories in one sitting…so I would far rather consume an extra couple of hundred calories a week through variety – and continue to lose weight – than get bored and throw in the towel.
So I am going to try and have a couple of new breakfasts this week and see how things go. I am also going to have a look over my past few weeks of posts and see if I can spot food trends and try and change things up a bit.
Anyway, as the afternoon has progressed – and following an email from the not so helpful Swiftcover – I am feeling really peed off! I just want to eat a house…but am so far resisting. How can my mood go from being fairly happy go lucky in the morning, to miserable cowbag in the evening?! Someone please send me a kick up the bum in the post!
Let’s have a quick look at the usuals – I am feeling all whistlestop today…
Up, group, lunch, babysitting, home – and moaning! That is pretty much the sum total of my day. The babysitting went well again, apart from being forced to watch ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and then being asked for Nutella on toast for their tea. So it was a tough afternoon of chocolate resistance! I then read the email from Swiftcover and just saw ‘red’ – they are really messing me around, either them or their recommended repairers, and I am getting totally fed up now. I sent another email over to them threatening legal action if they didn’t pull their fingers out…although quite what action I would take when I don’t have a solicitor…maybe I should have thought of that. I just think that two weeks to source parts to fix my car is a joke – it’s not an AC Cobra…it’s a fecking Freelander – albeit a limited edition model, but that affects the body, trim and the wheels, not the mechanical parts! Argh – I need to calm down as I can feel my old habits creeping up and I do not want to give into the lure of a takeaway!
Breakfast: Banana and two Benefit bars (HEB).
Lunch: Leftover Sri Lankan yellow beef curry.
Dinner: Smoked River Cobbler fillet, syn free chips, cheesy mushy peas (HEA) and roast onion.
Snacks: Squares crisps and raspberries with fat free fromage frais.
Breakfast was a quick grab and go affair, as was lunch really – I needed to get something to eat before heading off to my babysitting session. Dinner was planned to prevent the ordering of crispy squid…for some reason I want to eat the house today and could easily have eaten a huge amount of highly synned food! So although there was a lack of Superfree – a token roasted red onion – it helped to fill me up and prevent a binge. Although the crisps did that too!
Exercise: Just running around after the kids, and parking at the far end of the carpark at group…instead of next to the door! So not much at all really.
Thank you for reading – I promise that tomorrow will be more upbeat!
